Mint - Mentha piperita (Peppermint)

A fragrant, rhizomatous, upright perennial most commonly grown as a culinary or medicinal herb and/or groundcover. Peppermint is good for garden borders, containers, and rain gardens. Features rounded to lance-shaped, toothed leaves and terminal spikes of small pink summer flowers which bloom from July to August. Peppermint is used to flavor teas, ice cream, candy, chewing gum, toothpaste, etc. It is also used for garnishes, potpourris, and cut flower arrangements. Originally treated as a species, peppermint is now known to be a cross between Mentha aquatica (watermint) and Mentha spicata (spearmint). Best grown in rich, moist soils with full sun to partial shade. Adapts to a wide range of soils; prefers consistent moisture. Post-bloom shearing will stimulate new vegetative growth and maintain a neat form. Soil barriers may be used to restrain rhizomatous spread if plants are grown in borders or other areas where spread is unwanted. Attracts bees and butterflies; tolerates rabbit, deer, and wet soil. 1-2'H x 1-2'W. USDA Zones 5-9.
